This lakeside cabin, on the banks of one of Minnesota's 10,000 lakes, melds memories of days gone by with environmentally sensitive, forward-thinking design. As a frequent destination of summers past for the family who will one day reside here, the lake is a location of particular sentimental significance.
In keeping with that communal spirit, the design prioritizes gathering space over bedroom size—as any good cabin should. The interior palette is minimal and Scandinavian-inspired, featuring light hardwood, plywood paneling, wood ceilings, warm grey tile, and wood floors.
The exterior is clad in a thermally modified wood with dark bronze windows to match the roof and fascia. That thermal feature is just one design element that addresses the climate on the lake, which can reach temperatures as low as -45 degrees. The cabin also uses insulated concrete form foundations, exterior insulation, and extra insulation in the wall and roof cavities so that even when the winter is harsh, the inhabitants stay warm.
