The north banks of the Columbia River provide a humbling geographical context for this 1,900 square foot single-family house. The form is a response to the active view corridors while simultaneously attempting to modestly fit within the landscape. The house maintains a high level of design detail while creatively negotiating budgetary constraints.
The master bathroom continues to the exterior with an outdoor shower that frames a westerly view down the Columbia River.
To the east of the house sits a large garage and workshop, and between them, a wind-sheltered courtyard with landscaping by the green thumbed owners. Both the main residence and the detached garage are clad in rusty weathering steel with black accents of hot-dipped steel plate. This material palette nicely complements the surrounding verdant green pasture in warmer months and a white blanket of snow in the winter.
